IS FISHING FOR ME?
It’s an important question to ask yourself, and we want to be honest straight from the start. It’s not for everyone. We would never seek to mislead anyone about what it takes to succeed at Sea.
Our goal here is to inspire you and present the facts , if you feel this life is right for you then it could be the greatest thing you’ve ever done. Remember fishing is a very physical, manual job. You must be physically fit to even attempt this life, there are many who are surprised by the pace and requirements needed. It can be a fantastic career but there are risks associated with it.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for potential Fisherman of any gender, from School leaving age to thirty. Our mission is to replace the retiring Fisherman and bring in the next generation. Then guide them to be Skippers of the future.
WHAT IS IT LIKE AT SEA?
It’s a question we get asked a lot. So we’ve tried to answer this from the point of view of experienced Skippers and Crew. We all know people who have thought it was for them and ultimately it wasn’t… On the flip side we know people who came from no Fishing background to Skipper their own boat.
Being a Self Employed Commercial Fisherman has its plus’s and minus’s. It’s a very physically demanding job, and at times mentally demanding. Sometimes antisocial hours are involved depending on tide times and weather.
It’s a personal thing and this is why we call it a life at sea, we recommend a trial (after you have your Sea Safety training completed). A trial can help you get a feel for the job, the sea and a crew. Remember you might not drop onto your “forever crew” first time.
WILL I GET RICH?
There’s a great opportunity at Sea as a Commercial Fisherman. It’s like any job, you have to learn, commit, persevere and keep turning up to succeed. There’s no short cuts here, you’re part of a team, you’re relied on. As part of the team, success is shared and you will reap the rewards if you’re part of a like minded crew.
You can earn fantastic money. BUT you must also be smart with your money, there are lean times to the season (such as winter). You need to prioritise your money to keep the wolf from the door till the Fishing returns.
